Three Mattapoisett homeowners have filed a class action lawsuit against Bouchard Transportation, Inc., seeking damages for pollution of their property from the 2003 oil spill in Buzzard's Bay.

SSWG Wins Maritime Law Motion in Buzzards Bay Class Action
After Plaintiffs, represented by SSWG, prevailed at the first stage of the Class Action trial, Defendants filed a motion asking the Court to rule that "federal maritime law" principles must be applied in the case. Through that motion, Defendants attempted to deny to Class members the benefit of Massachusetts laws that provide for double damages, pre-judgment interest, and attorney fees and costs. These state laws can increase the value of the Mattapoisett Class members' claims beyond what the jury awarded. SSWG successfully opposed the motion, with and the court holding that Massachusetts law, and not federal maritime law, will be applied in this case.

National Lawyers Guild Profiles Patty Garin's Success
Patty Garin is praised for her success in the case Commonwealth v. Leonard Lacy, a 1973 first degree murder trial. In 2010, with her motion for a new trial pending, the Commonwealth finally made a deal that made Lacy a free man. After 36 years of wrongful incarceration he walked out of the courtroom and out of prison, finally, in February 2010.

SSWG attorney Jeffrey Wiesner represents Shepard Fairey
SSWG attorney Jeffrey Wiesner represents Shepard Fairey, noted public artist and creator of the iconic “Hope” image of Barack Obama. Mr. Fairey is charged with posting his art at various location in Boston without permission. He was arrested while on the way to the opening reception of an exhibit of his work at the Institute of Contemporary Art. Mr. Wiesner critcized the timing of the arrest as the exercise of “bad judgment.”
